"Tim Kelly and Steve Varga stalk along the beach abutting Fairfield’s Lake Mohegan accompanied by a string of beeps and buzzes. Suddenly, the sounds at Kelly’s feet intensify, and the two painters hit the ground and begin scooping up spadefuls of sand. They dig about eight inches when they hit the cause of their metal detector’s alarm — a small rock.

'You have to have patience,' Varga says. 'A lot of people that buy this equipment end up putting them in the closet because they didn’t find that gold ring they thought they were going to find on the beach.'"

Where are the Hydrants?

"If you saw an Easton firefighter with a metal detector over the last few days, he or she was looking for buried treasure. Treasure, that is, in the form of some of the town’s 230 fire hydrants buried by this winter’s heavy snow.

'We’ve got them all done — this is the last one,' said Firefighter Mike Sabia, who was digging out a backup hydrant on Center Road near Town Hall as the sun set on a chilly Monday afternoon."

CT Woman Hits the Beach

"Former Orange, Conn. music teacher Lorraine Zuba was prospecting at Westport’s Compo Beach today. Among her metal detector’s finds—a 2010 Westport dog license (inset). The Derby resident said she’s enjoyed the hobby for about five years and last week found a 1784 Connecticut coin on a beach. 'I listen for the pings--sometimes it’s a ‘C,’ or ‘E flat’ and I know what kind of metal I’ve found,' Zuba said."
