From The Archive: 5-23-08 Night Hunt

Making it back to the same sandy tot lot as the day before, I was hoping to find much more. For a small area it sure seemed to be rich with clad, though nothing too old.

This would be the beginning of my night hunting legacy. I went out a little after 10p EST, and it was perfect. No one was out to bother me, and the night was cool.

It was very quiet out though, and being that at this point in time I was still operating sans headphones, the ACE was blaring out it's beeps at the only volume is knows how, LOUD. Haha, I wouldn't have been surprised if people heard it in their apartments.

Walked away that night with $1.33 as well as a Canadian cent.

From The Archive: CHX Beach 5-22-08

I remember this day pretty well for one main reason, it completely turned me off to beach hunting. I was new at this whole MD thing so I guess I kind of went out there expecting a lot more than I was capable of finding.

So first off, I met up with my friend Denise. She and I drove out to a section of Chix Beach, a few blocks from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. I figured right away, being that this is nowhere near the resort section, my finds would be meager at best.

I scanned a little dry sand at first, but nothing was hitting. So then I took my ACE over to the water's edge, as if I had any clue what I was doing. I received so many false signals (which I didn't know until I dug) and other crap signals I had no clue what was going on. It was not until much later on in my MD experience that I found out about turning the sensitivity down, and that the ACE is not made for wet sand portions of beach so I would be driven nuts.

But anyhow, I spied some volleyball net poles, and decided before I left I was definitely going to hunt that area. So while Denise was walking around picking up shells and talking to random strangers on the beach, I scanned the pit. Ended up walking away with what you see pictured at the top of this post.

1 x Nail
1 x Screw
1 x Some sort of anchoring attachment
8 x Bottle Caps
1 x little metal round thingie
3 x Pull tabs
9 x Pennies (1980, 1992, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 1 x Unknown)
2 x Nickels (1998, 2007)
4 x Dimes (1990, 2001, 2 x 2005)

$0.83... but I guess along with the rest of the digs, the day wasn't too shabby.

From The Archive: First Day Out 5-19-08

As I recall, my first day out was on a relatively nice, not too warm, sunny day in May. I had been cleaning out my closet where I keep miscellaneous things so as to not clutter the rest of the place, when I saw my metal detector I had purchased maybe two years prior, and had never really gotten out and used it.

It was a nice bright yellow Garrett ACE 250 I had bought online from AAFES.

So I said what the hey, threw some batteries in it and outside I went. Right out front of my apartment is a nice large community field. It seemed like a logical place to start. However early on I realized that digging in dirt, completely sucks ass. The apartments also have what we in "the BIZ" call a tot lot (playground for children). It was filled with sand, and what better a substance to dig in, than sand!

Over the next hour or so I dug out what you see pictured above. I'll inventory it for your reading pleasure.

3 x Pull Tabs
1 x Nail
1 x Bent Hoop Earing
1 x Aerosol Cap
3 x UFO
2 x Nickels (1997, 2005)
6 x Dimes (1974, 1993, 2 x 1995, 1999, 2000)
13 x Pennies (1969, 1970, 1972, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006)

For those of you that are new to the hobby, or in general not familiar with the term I used there, UFO. I use this to refer to "Unidentified Ferrous Objects", or simply metal things that are unknown to myself.

Not too long after that first trip, and feeling pretty good about what I had done a few hours earlier, I went back out, this time landing what you see in the following picture.

4 x Quarters (1980, 1981, 2001, 2008)
3 x Pennies (1959, 1994, 2001)
2 x Nickels (2004, 2007)
1 x Dime (2006)

I really couldn't have been more happy with my first day out, netting $2.06 in clad out of the sandbox.
