Cumbrian Roman Coin Hoard

"John Murray, 66, was amazed to find 308 Roman coins, some thought to be nearly 2,000 years old. The hoard was concealed in a smashed pot a few feet below the ground at Beckfoot, near Silloth.

It is the second major Roman find in Cumbria, following the Crosby Garrett helmet which was unearthed by a metal detectorist last May.

Bearing the heads of various emperors, the coins have been taken to the British Museum for restoration and analysis."

Cache of Bronze Coins in York

"An elderly metal-detecting enthusiast has told how she found a hoard of 3,600 coins dating back to the third century in a field near York.

Marjorie Dandy, 75, of Thornton-le-Clay, near Malton, said the bronze coins had been buried inside three pots, one of which had survived intact.

She was speaking after coroner Michael Oakley declared at an inquest that the coins, described as rare survivals of the period by experts at the British Museum, were treasure trove."

Cache of US Double Eagles Found in UK

""The rare ‘Double Eagle’ $20 pieces, dating from 1854 to 1913, may be worth a six-figure sum.

The coins, minted mostly in San Francisco and Philadelphia, are so large that each one weighs 33 grams.

They were uncovered by two residents, who hit on the find while gardening with friends in Hackney, east London."
